PRAGMATISMMEANING AND DEFINITION The term pragmatism is derived from the Greek word pragma which means action, from which words like practice and practical have been derived. It can be easily understood through this that pragmatism is basically the greater impact of practical due to which pragmatism is often translated as practicalism (Agarwal, Bansal & Maheshwari, 2010). Charles Pierce introduced this word in philosophy, in 1878 when he wrote an essay in the “Popular Science Monthly” on “How to make our ideas clear”in which he gave the idea of pragmatism when he said that any idea can only be understood if  it is examined in terms of consequences to which it leads to. Pragmatism gives emphasis upon what is practical, efficient, fruitful and satisfying. Educational philosophy is no doubt a matter that has changed over the decades, and still today not everyone is in total agreement on the subject. However, one thing is certain philosophy is the foundation of educational styles. Today, four basic educational philosophies exist including idealism, realism, pragmatism, and existentialism. All four philosophies are very different, but all strive for the same goal, to better our education system. Although every teacher has a different style of teaching that can be considered their own, they all adhere to one of the four basic philosophies. However, It may take a teacher many years to master, and recognize their style as one of the philosophies.

This philosophy "interprets the world through feelings".(50) Many believe existentialism could destroy existing education as we know it. "Self actualization, and self realization are themes"(50) associated with an existentialist view. A teacher practicing this philosophy may be more interactive with their students and wants to know the students thoughts and feelings on particular issues, and subjects.

In conclusion, although the philosophies of education are very different, they all have very strong beliefs about the way students should be taught. I don’t feel that any of the philosophies are wrong, however, I agree with the existentialist philosophy the most. I feel teachers should interact with students about their feelings. In giving the subject much thought, I have to say that the teachers who left the biggest imprint on my education were existentialists. It is the philosophy that I best relate to, however I am aware that everyone has their own unique learning style, and adhere to different techniques.
